As we head into May, we’re proud to support Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May), led by the Mental Health Foundation. This year’s theme is ‘Community’—a reminder of how vital connection and belonging are to our mental well-being.
Supportive communities help us feel safe, valued, and less alone. They give us purpose and help us thrive—both at work and in life.
To support your teams, we offer both online and in-person mental health courses designed to promote well-being and resilience in the workplace.
We have been advised that the HSE is currently placing a strong focus on ensuring employers meet their duties regarding health surveillance.
If employees are still exposed to risks—such as noise, vibration, or hazardous substances—even after controls have been implemented, health surveillance may be a legal requirement.
Health surveillance involves regular checks designed to detect early signs of work-related ill health and must be managed by a qualified occupational health professional. It is distinct from general health checks or screening, applying only to specific workplace risks.
In certain cases, such as exposure to asbestos or lead, surveillance must be carried out by an HSE-appointed doctor.
Effective health surveillance also helps educate workers about health risks and provides an opportunity for them to raise any concerns.

Trainers Top Tips
Each edition, our expert trainer Andrew shares a vital tip. This month Andrew’s tip ties in with Mental Health Awareness Week and highlights the power of small, everyday interactions. Whether it’s a quick chat in the break room, checking in with a colleague, or simply saying hello – it all adds up. Micro-connections can boost our mood, reduce stress, and help build a stronger sense of community in the workplace. So this week, try reaching out—even briefly. You never know the positive impact it might have on someone’s day (or your own!).
